The Really (not So Very Actually) New Holm Page
As of November 2013, I am currently in the process of implementing Joomla to use as the content management system for The Holm Page. Not only is Joomla apparently the most popular open-source CMS right now, but this is also the CMS for the web page for my work. The more I can learn, the better...
It is now 2019, and I've made little to no progress. But! leh was here...19 Mar 2019, at 23:58
The host for "larsericholm.com" is FatCow, and I am also experimenting with using FatCow's various and sundry other services.
I'm especially experimenting freely with the WordPress and various Gallery items, because not only do these stand alone well, but might dovetail with Joomla well.
I'm hoping that eventually all of these experiments will mean that I end up posting words and photos more frequently, clearly, and consistently.
In-transition version of the new site:
Pages experimenting with on this new site:
- Blog (via WordPress)
- This will likely become a component (term used correctly?) on the Joomla page. Blogs are still blogs, after all. And WordPress is still very popular.
- Photo Gallery (via ZenPhoto)
- Currently Under Repair. This was the first of my three experiments with photo galleries. I liked it best: it's simple, I can FTP photos in batches, and, most importantly it allows viewers to rate the photos and post comments. However, it somehow broke, so it's currently uninstalled. Will try to re-install it, unless I find that Joomla's handling of galleries is somehow better.
- PhotoBlog (via PixelPress)
- Not quite a photo gallery, and I don't know that this is something I'll immediately use, but I like the idea of having a high-resolution photo blog. NOT the same concept as sharing a bunch of family photos. This is more "tell a story via a stream of photos" type of blog. Keeping for reference.
- CopperMine
- Currently Broken. The third of my three experiments. I know I briefly tried another item called "CopperMine". Keeping for reference. I don't remember what I thought of it. Might entirely delete it.
Links to other "Holm Page" presences:
These are all blogs created using WordPress to host, as opposed to my WordPress blog link above, which is hosted by FatCow. I might implement these as newsfeeds my new Joomla blog.
- Attempts at a blog
- Which I still might resurrect. I'll compare and contrast to using WordPress as hosted by FatCow, per my link above. Nothing wrong with this, and it seems to be easily posted to via various methods: cell phone, mobile, e-mail, and so on.
- Our Travel Blog
- Retired? Only meant for our 2007 trip to Europe, but I should post an afterthought or two and keep this somewhat alive.
- leh in Seattle
- The blog I use whenever I go to visit my daughter Monika in Seattle. The fun part is that I made this some time ago, using an iPad I have from work, while on the bus, and updated it from a restaurant, and from Monika's apartment. This was just to document that this could be easy. It's since gotten easier. I also sometimes post Seattle related news to this blog, or Monika related news.
- leh Weebly test account
- I was playing with a Weebly app on my iPad, partially because another website I am connected to is maintained that way. And also to see if this might be a faster way to maintain a site. Just an experiment, and not looking so likely, as I'm not interested in incurring extra fee.
